Portugal is adapting its gas grid for a 10% hydrogen blend. A waste-to-hydrogen project in Thailand has been announced from Toyota Motor. Find this and more stories in our newsletter of the week.
REN, an energy company in Portugal, is taking steps to adapt its high-pressure natural gas grid to accommodate a blend of 10 percent hydrogen fuel with natural gas. The company plans to begin transporting this hydrogen-natural gas blend as early as this year, according to an official statement. Additionally, the Portuguese government is set to hold its inaugural auction for the rights to sell green hydrogen fuel, scheduled for the second half of 2023. The auction winners will be responsible for supplying the hydrogen that will be injected into the national natural gas grid. This move has garnered attention from analysts who anticipate that it could accelerate the growth of the hydrogen market in Europe.

In China, the world's largest green hydrogen project has successfully generated its first batch of green hydrogen without emitting carbon dioxide. The project, located in Ordos, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in north China, utilizes solar and wind renewables for hydrogen production. Despite being the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen globally, less than 0.1 percent of China's hydrogen comes from renewable sources. This new project is anticipated to provide 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 240,000 tonnes of green oxygen annually, resulting in a reduction of approximately 1.43 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Verde Hydrogen, a leading US-based company specializing in carbon-zero hydrogen solutions, has entered into an agreement to develop and commission a 2MW green hydrogen electrolyzer project in Morocco. The installation of this project is expected to be completed in early 2024. The project's implementation represents a significant milestone for both Verde Hydrogen and the green hydrogen market in North Africa. It will use Verde Hydrogen's 2MW containerized electrolyzer, known as Verde-400, which incorporates the company's latest patented technology for advanced alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production.

The EU Clean Hydrogen Partnership has awarded a €20 million grant to the consortium HOPE – Hydrogen Offshore Production Europe. The consortium, which includes companies like Plug Power from the US and Lhyfe from France, will develop a pioneering floating electrolyzer that utilizes renewable energy to extract green hydrogen from purified seawater. The project will feature a seawater treatment system and a 10-megawatt electrolyzer, with an anticipated production capacity of 4 tonnes of hydrogen per day. Situated at an offshore test site in the North Sea near the port of Ostend in Belgium, the hydrogen will be distributed to customers within a 300-kilometer radius.

Toyota Motor has announced plans to initiate a waste-to-hydrogen project in Thailand, commencing in November. Collaborating with Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), Toyota aims to make use of biogas derived from chicken manure sourced from CP Group's poultry farms, and food waste from the Toyota regional headquarters' cafeteria. As part of this project, waste-to-hydrogen equipment by Japanese engineering company Mitsubishi Kakoki will be installed, capable of producing 1,000 liters of H2 every hour.
