Change of Directions - Hydrogen Newsletter 22.02.2023
In our newsletter, we want to give you an overview of what is happening in the world of hydrogen and have a look, how other countries are preparing for the hydrogen revolution.
Welcome to Change of Directions,
The war in Ukraine and the cut down of the oil production from OPEC+ showed that energy independence is one of the most important things governments should look for to ensure the energy supply of their country. Some countries have started to invest heavily into hydrogen and others will follow.
A good overview about what is going on currently can be found in the article from Wardsauto. David Kiley has a closer look at what different states in the US are planning, and he provides a handy list that shows how much money other states are putting into the development of hydrogen. https://www.wardsauto.com/industry-news/hydrogen-finally-getting-its-day
A hydrogen economy is especially interesting for African countries. Growing populations, especially in countries like Nigeria or Kenya, will raise the need for more energy. So far, like many others, these countries import their oil. But some have identified that hydrogen provides a solution for energy independence. Bloomberg’s Antony Sguazzin has a report from South Africa. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-14/south-africa-says-creating-a-successful-hydrogen-industry-may-cost-250-billion
A growing market is always fascinating for investors and in the US, the first big investment firms have already started to pour money into the hydrogen market. Tina Casey from Triple Pundit takes a closer look into the investment market. https://www.triplepundit.com/story/2022/global-green-hydrogen-race/760046
Startups are playing a vital part in the growing hydrogen market. Since most Startups have a shorter time to market development and hydrogen has become the center of attention for the future of the energy, venture capital is pouring into hydrogen startups. Ed Ballard from the Wall Street Journal has a look and some of the most promising new companies. https://www.wsj.com/articles/startups-bring-down-cost-green-hydrogen-11668117024
One of the fastest growing and interesting hydrogen markets is China. The country faces the problem of being too reliant on energy imports and an outdated energy sector. The majority of the energy in China is still produced by coal plants, which affects the air quality to the point where it is too dangerous to go outside. Our colleagues from the China Hydrogen Bulletin here on Substack have a closer look at what China is doing.
